More recently, Eugene was accepted as an international member of the Birmingham Watercolour Society (BWS), founded in 1907 in Birmingham, England. The BWS is one of the oldest and most prestigious societies in England.

Missouri Medicine The cover of the April 1988 issue of the Missouri State Medical Journal featured Dr. Bortnick's painting of the late Kansas City Royals pitcher, Dan Quisenberry. As one of the organization's best relief pitchers of all time, Quisenberry helped the Royals win two American League pennants and a World Series during his 13-year stint with the team. Quisenberry died on November 30, 1998.

The painting now hangs in a prominent Kansas City medical office.
